Tribute Submission Question

Post by Fiveliter302 »

My band's submission (Fool) for the tribute is 99.9% complete (mixing vocals is a BITCH!). How am I to go about submitting? I plan on putting up a myspace page for my band this weekend and putting it on there so you guys can hear it, but until then, I would like to be able to submit it. The high quality WAV file is close to 90MB in size. The MP3 is about 9MB in size.

So I guess my questions are:
What format should it be in?
Where/how to submit it?

FINISHED!!!
For now until I get the myspace page up, if you want to hear a very low quality (the player I use makes everything highly compressed) version go to my website http://www.fiveliter302.com/main.html and click on where it says "Click here for Fiveliter302 tunes". Its the first song on the list "Fool_Cover".

Give me some feedback, good or bad PLEASE!!

I would think the final submission would have to be uncompressed. Maybe you can use something like www.yousendit.com that allows you to email large files to get it to him.

Yeah, I just need to know how to get it to him. He seems to have disappeared for a bit.

Feedback on Fool cover

Post by dan »

Hi Fiveliter,

Great work on the cover, you've really hit the guitar work on the head. Very accurate riffs.

A few things that I might recommend, take it or leave it..

I'm sure the mp3 compression doesn't do much justice to the sound depth, but the mix is overall quite sonically flat. I'd suggest giving the kick drum a lot more prominence to boost the depth of the mix, try a little compression and some EQing on the lower end, but try not to flood the low end spectrum, just tighten it up. Hit up the snare with some compressors too.

The vocals are really well done, two things that come to mind though are the small-space reverb is a little misleading to me as a listener. It sounds like you've either recorded it in a tiny room or have used a reverb that's not quite the right size. If it's been recorded that way, try running a soft gate to cut back some natural reverb, then compress it to fill it up a bit. Also a slight chorus effect would really smooth out some of those sharp peaks. Try using a deesser to smooth it off too, if you've got one available.

I really like the ending!

Keep it happening

Cheers,
Dan

Thanks for the input!

I finally got the myspace page up, so it is definitely much better quality on there.

I had a hell of a time getting the vocals to even sound that good (mixing vocals is a BITCH!). I will definitely look into your suggestions.

Very much appreciated!!!
