If you want to learn how to create some original sounds, I recommend you search for a copy of Buzz (it's a freeware app) but expect a HUGE learning curve.
It's worth it as you create "machines" in the program that make original sounds. There are also hundreds of pre-made machines you can download and use in your own songs.
I realize a decent synth can cost a fortune so before you drop $2k as a newbie, or waste $500 on an amateur synth, try an app like Buzz to get your feet wet.

Your right it does have a steep learning curve but it will get you into learning and that is worth the price of $0. The site is http://www.buzzmachines.com/. Download and play around.
