I know for a synth they used the Nord Lead 2. It's a kick-butt digital synth that sounds analog.

Fruity Loops has some good sounds and sound packs, and it can be used, but I think the point is that its just hard to use.

I am going to weigh in here on the age old debate, what sucks , fruity, ableton, reason, or whatever.
They all have there strengths.
Fruity is pretty in depth actually, and you can create some really insane sounds in there. David used that and WASP. That's a good combiantions. Fruity is the easiest for creating qucik drum pattersn.
Reason. Same thing, can make great sounds. I don't like it that much really, easy drum patterns can be made but not that easy in the sequencer for me.
Ableton as far as recording audio is the shiz. Unfortuantely there are no rigth clicks and things I like but they made it that way for a reason. Midi support is good but the Impulse instrument is a piece of crap. You can make patterns in the midi view. I have found that Reason is the program I have made the most realisitc patterns in.
So I would use Ableton, and use Native Instruments Battery as a sound module, Guitar Rig 2 for guitar and bass (awesome) and some othe NI plug ins.
All are good but cost too much. Bittorent is your friend.
